George Lawrence Rarick (1911-1995) became a professor of human biodynamics in the Department of Physical Education at the University of California, Berkeley in 1968. Rarick was born in Stockton, Kansas and educated at the University of Kansas, Fort Hays Kansas State College, and the University of Iowa. He served as director of physical education for men at the University of Wichita and on the faculties of Boston University and the University of Wisconsin. His research focused on the motor development and motor performance of children and youth and particularly, in his later career, on motor development in disabled children. The author of six books, Rarick is credited with being a founding researcher in the field of adapted physical activity as well as with helping change society's attitudes towards disabled children and their motor potential and abilities. Rarick's 1952 book Motor Development During Infancy and Childhood is considered a classic in the field. Rarick advised many organizations, including the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, which sponsors the Special Olympics.
